Client Restoration Project

Mohonk Mountain House

New Paltz, NY

259 guestrooms, Grand Staircase, common areas and antique fireplaces, multiphase restoration project since 2008.

Member of Historic Hotels of America.

Mohonk Mountain House was our flagship historic hotel project and introduction to the world of Historic Hotels of America & Historic Hotels Worldwide. Northern Lights Restoration has enjoyed this long-standing partnership with Mohonk Mountain House and each project brings us back to our memorable start together. Over the years, we have refinished numerous guestroom furnishings, historic parlors and lounges, the Central Grand Staircase (featuring 1400 hand-tooled spindles), and 100 antique fireplace mantels. We provide both furniture refinishing and architectural woodwork restoration services in various locations of the resort and through ongoing maintenance programs.

Founder Albert & Alfred Smiley established Mohonk Mountain House in 1869 as a lakeside sanctuary in the Shawangunk Mountains, with the aim of providing both recreation and a return to nature. Six generations of the Smiley family have since expanded the original ten-room inn into the sprawling National Historic Landmark it is today. The resort, with historic building additions from 1879–1910 and a modern 2005 spa wing, features 259 guest rooms and 150 original, working fireplaces, some over a century old. Surrounded by 40,000 acres of pristine forest, this iconic castle resort is located just 90 miles north of New York City.

Since 2014, Northern Lights Restoration has been the preferred restoration vendor to Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. They have made a visible impact on our member hotels across the country, ranging from intricate armoires in the Garberville treasure Benbow Inn (1926), to the famous Grand Staircase of the Georgian landmark Jekyll Island Club Hotel (1887), to the 98 guestrooms and Tavern on the Green at the Salem staple, the Hawthorne Hotel (1925). In each instance, we have seen our hotels embracing this important element of preservation by using the skills of Northern Lights Restoration to extend the life of their historic pieces.

We are happy to recommend Bob Stephens and his team at Northern Lights Restoration to anyone considering architectural woodwork restoration/ historic preservation project.
