The Historic Boone Tavern Hotel invited Northern Lights Restoration to work on its 63 guestrooms and main elevator. Each guestroom features custom solid cherry wood furniture crafted by local Berea College students, many of which needed to be sanded down and completely refinished. It was rewarding to restore these handcrafted pieces, knowing they were made by the very students who are the heart of the hotel.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Boone Tavern Hotel is a historic establishment owned by Berea College and uniquely operated by students from its College Labor Program. The hotel, named after Appalachian hero Daniel Boone, was conceived by Eleanor Frost, wife of then-Berea College President William G. Frost. The original 25-room building opened in 1909, notably built with bricks manufactured by college students in the Berea College brickyard and constructed by the college’s Woodwork Department. Located on the Old Dixie Highway, the Boone Tavern has gained a reputation for traditional Southern hospitality and cuisine.
