Since 2014, Northern Lights Restoration has proudly partnered with the Hawthorne Hotel. Our extensive work has encompassed refinishing complete furniture sets for 93 guestrooms, restoring both of its restaurants, and refreshing all common area furnishings. Among these projects, the most impressive was the comprehensive restoration of The Tavern bar’s stunning floor-to-ceiling oak-paneled walls and ceiling.
Overlooking the serene Salem Common, the Hawthorne Hotel, a historic landmark, first opened its doors in 1925 and is named after renowned author and Salem native Nathaniel Hawthorne. This Federal-style building, constructed in 1924, stands on the original site of the Salem Marine Society’s headquarters, which famously rebuilt an exact replica of an East India trade vessel’s cabin on the hotel’s roof. The Hawthorne Hotel’s renown stems not only from its numerous awards but also from its captivating reputation as one of the country’s most haunted establishments, drawing countless visitors through its historic doors.

Managing a historic property unquestionably comes with its own challenges, and maintaining its celebrated grandeur and physical appearances, especially when restoration of woodwork is involved, are among the many concerns for a hotelier. The Hawthorne Hotel was no exception to that.
